Terminator Salvation
Jun. 13th, 2009 09:15 amNot by any means a classic, but not, I thought, anything like as bad as many of the reviews seemed to make out. Yes, Bale's performance is so one-note as to make his portrayal of Batman seem subtle and nuanced, but both Sam Worthington (who ought to have good things ahead of him) and Anton Yelchin (although I kept on having to pinch myself and say 'NOT CHEKOV NOW') made a pretty good effort to compensate.
Effects: astonishing. Plot: nice idea, but it all got a bit wibbly at the end.
Bad bits:
- Trying to give Skynet a personification, a la Borg Queen.
- Allegedly strong female characters who are utterly inept and slaves to their own emotions.
- Dodgy time-paradox: if Skynet is only just starting to create T-800s, how can it know about the previous failed attempts to kill John Connor?
- Having us believe that in this post-apocalypse world, the resistance have computer networks way better than the fanciest command and control systems in the military today.
- Ditto re performing a heart transplant in a field dressing station.
Clanger rating: 3 froglets out of 5.
