[personal profile] darth_hamster and I are just back from a meal at the St John Restaurant. Unlike Archipelago, where we ate a few weeks ago and which specialises in conventional bits of unusual animals, St John specialises in making use of all bits of the animals on the menu. Mind you, there's a bit of unconventional stuff too; I've not seen cuttlefish offered up for a good while. There will probably be a more comprehensive review later, but I'll note that not only is the food excellent, but if you manage (as we did) to sit next to a large group who ordered in advance you get the entertainment of watching them tackle whole crab followed by suckling pig - including head. Not cheap, but highly recommended if you are emphatically carnivorous and don't mind the prospect of dinner looking at you.

Whilst doing some Christmas shopping in Paul A Young Chocolates (whose MD is on ORG's Board of Directors, so I feel duty-bound to visit) I saw Christmas Pudding Brownie on offer. Now, I like Christmas pudding, and I like chocolate brownie, so I thought I'd give it a go.

I have just tried it, along with my morning coffee.

That was a mistake. No, not in the sense of anything unpleasant - far from it! Rather, eating it off a napkin along with a cup of Caffe Nero coffee was woefully inadequate to the experience. That brownie should have been eaten off one's best dessert plate, accompanied by fine cream or brandy butter (or both) and some organic berries, served with the sort of coffee that has been unusually intimate with a civet, ideally all conveyed to you as you recline decadently by the scantily-clad nubile/hunky Member of the Appropriate Sex of your choice.

It's that good.

Incredibly moist, rich, chocolately, fruity, spicy... Yes, it's probably got rather a lot of calories in it but I don't mind. There is an argument that if you are going to eat fattening food then it should be really, really nice; imagine a figure of merit of yumminess-per-kcal, and on any graph of foods this one is going to be scoring very highly indeed.

OK. I've calmed down a bit now. But they're getting my business again. I just hope this isn't purely a seasonal product!
