For [livejournal.com profile] dorispossum and [livejournal.com profile] bdikkat's annual Thanksgiving-themed party I rashly offered to try making Piecaken.

To my amazement, it worked:

TG2013_Cakes_21.jpg

The top layer is home-made apple pie embedded in vanilla sponge. The bottom layer is home-made cherry pie (using cherries marinaded in Kirsch for four months) embedded in chocolate sponge. The whole lot is held together and covered in vanilla buttercream icing, and because that didn't look very neat has a layer of fondant icing on top. Additional decoration (and much advice and help) from [livejournal.com profile] attimes_bracing, who will probably be posting pics of her own cake-making efforts for the same party.

General feedback was positive (with a large side-order of WTF!) but I've now been asked what I'm going to do to top this next year...

Curse you sir! Curse you for having such wonderful things when I am not around to partake!

Also, I now have to do something crazy impressive.

That looks delicious! We had our Thanksgiving yesterday. Other people brought cake and I made pumpkin pie, so we had pie and cake. But it's not the same!

Am simultaneously afeared & drooling. Awesome.

And if you included coffee you'd have a full five a day in there: cherries, chocolate, apple, sugar and coffee.

The piecaken was massive, in all senses. And surprisingly tasty, particularly the kirch cherries pie bit :) We were well impressed that you managed Maintain Tradition (by bringing the Damn Fine Cherry Pie + Apple pie). And what packaging! Truly a triumph of engineering... :)
