A couple of days ago [livejournal.com profile] darth_hamster and I were walking through central Birmingham and noticed one of these.

"What is that thing?" I asked.

The answer, I found today, is 'the car you are renting for the next week'. I am already bracing myself for my brother's comments when we do our round of family visiting.

It's probably great fun to drive, though.

So you will soon be able to tell us what a compact crossover really is...

I've seen worse. At least it ought to be reasonably comfortable, and the suspension is high enough that you should be able to cope with water on the roads.

That's exactly the word I used in a comment elsewhere. Together with the observation: "You are driving Eric Pickles' nose".

The Real Dinky Toy car is one of these:

One of these is parked near where I live. Specialist importers bring them over from Japan and refurb them for sale here.

I've seen the odd one of these in Tokyo. I hadn't realised it was only from 1991. It has a very much earlier styling.

There's a dealer specialising in those near Cambridge Heath station that we used to walk past when we took the bus to Broadway Market on a Saturday morning. Very odd looking but I do see the odd one about.

For a while, there was one parked in our neighbour's drive.

We now have a new neighbour.

The class of car design called "mid-Pacific", because that's where it belongs.

Could have been worse; at least you didn't rent a Kallikak.

That's remarkable. I've never seen a car that looks like it's been punched in the face before.
