Friends within Friends
Sep. 28th, 2002 08:35 amA question on how LJ works. This is probably in the FAQ, but it's Saturday morning and I'm probably not reading it properly.
If I post a private journal entry, only my Friends can read it (and thus comment to it).
If someone I am a Friend of (say 'Bob') posts a private journal entry, I can read it and comment to it, and so can their other Friends.
But... who can see my comment? All of Bob's Friends? Or just those who are also my Friends?

Date: 2002-09-28 12:59 am (UTC)If people have access to the article they have access to the comments on it as well. So the only place you can control who sees your comments is on a post of your own.
Also, this is slightly different for communities. If you post a friends-only to AnonC your friends list has nothing to do with it all - the only people who will see that are community members.

Date: 2002-09-29 02:46 am (UTC)I asked because I was about to reply to a Friends-only post, and was on the point of including the sort of personal information that I would normally only put in a Friends-only post of my own. And I realised that I wasn't sure if there was a way of replying such that only people who were Friends of both of us could see.
A little further thought suggested that this was a bit of a futile exercise anyway. The intersection of two Friends lists might be quite small, and anyway what I am really trying to do is ensure that certain material is not posted where any anonymous reader can see it. Posting under most users' Friends-list protection should suffice for that.
