In terms of being 'smart', it was mainly a case of finding somewhere with interesting detail in the foreground (there was plenty in the mid-distance and background already!) and then ensuring that there was enough depth of field that it was all in focus.
Mount Rainier National Park is, I rather suspect, an awful place to teach landscape photography. It's almost impossible to take a bad picture there. Having said that, a good photographer is one who will get a really, really striking image even so. That's why there are millions of nice pictures of Yosemite but Ansel Adams' pictures still stand out as truly amazing.
