Exhibit A is a silicone rubber mat from Lakeland. It's about 15 cm across and we have some we use for stacking non-stick pans so that the bottom of one doesn't damage the finish inside the one below.

I was making some turmeric rice so I get out our small saucepan, put in rice, water, turmeric, butter and a little bit of stock and put it on the lovely gas hob in our nice new kitchen. I turned my back for a few seconds to put the ingredients away.

That's funny, I thought as I turned around, gas doesn't normally have a bright yellow flame that licks up round the side of the saucepan.

Ah. The mat will have stuck to the bottom of the saucepan then.

Some frantic turning off, blowing out and removal of mat remains ensued (Exhibit B).

Add to kitchen routine: check under pots before sticking them on the gas hob...

I thought the point of the silicone things was that they wouldn't melt? :(

What would happen if you put pan and mat on an induction hob? Presumably it just wouldn't start cooking?

The remains are rather beautiful, if less useful than previously. And also probably a bit smelly.

One step worse.

Many years ago, I was frying some liver. What I didn't realise was that the slices of liver also contained a slice of card that was so blood-soaked, it looked like just another slice of liver.

I didn't notice this until I started eating it. It was very chewy.
