I was about to post to see if anyone wanted to go and see Black Watch at the Barbican, the award-winning and much-praised play about the eponymous Scottish regiment's tour in Iraq just before it's amalgamation into the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Unfortunately, it turns out that the whole run has been sold out since before it opened.

Gah. There are tickets on offer on eBay but for around twice the face value. The trouble with reviews saying "this is the best thing you'll see all year" is that by the time you read them too many other people have worked that out and booked ahead...

Bugger. I was thinking about going to that -- I saw it last year while I was in Aberdeen, and it's definitely worth seeing again.

On the plus side, the Barbican are good about returns; if you get there early and queue, there's a very good chance of getting in.

I didn't know the regiment still existed in modern times. In my family lore, we were given our plaid by the Black Watch for hiding them from the Queen Elizabeth the first's forces.

Um. Someone's been pulling your collective legs: the regiment was founded in the 18th Century.

(Of course, you can make the case that the current QE is actually QE1 of Scotland....)

It looks like you are right, or I got it wrong. I'll have to check this further.
