I have mycophobia. I don't like fungi, in the same way some people don't like spiders, or confined spaces. It's not as bad as it used to be, and I can handle packaged button mushrooms or even eat them if they're prepared so that they no longer, well, look like fungi. But toadstools are revolting.

So there I was, wandering through Edinburgh farmers' market this morning. Ostrich burgers, mmm. Organic veg, looks nice. Arran cheese, yum. Shitake mushroom growing kits, AAARGH! TOO LATE TO LOOK AWAY!!!

You see, these kits consist of a 'log' of compressed woodchip which is evidently impregnated with mushroom spores, so a few weeks later it sprouts a crop of little fungi. What was particularly gross was that the 'log' managed to look almost exactly like a large farmhouse loaf, so the end product - of which there were several on display - looked for all the world like a loaf that was covered in fungus.

I'm not hungry now. I'm vaguely wondering if I'm ever going to be hungry again.

Oh dear. I know where there are pictures, but that might be unfair! Yes, you can get fancy chocolates shaped and coloured like funghi, just as you can get seashells and small animals.

Or there are the more traditional ones, a stalk of something like liquorice, a soft head (marshmallow or truffle of some kind), and a dusting of dessicated coconut.

Now he's had to flee to IKEA to escape the horror.

I sympathise entirely. I was in charge of the stationery order at the company I've just left, and the printer cartridges we got all had photographs of frogs on them. I yelped every time I had to open a box and they were in there. [shudder]

To misquote the Princess Brid
You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never reveal your greatest weakness in an unlocked LJ post.

Now when you try to take over the world I can foil your plans simply by reading you extracts of Jeff Vandermeer's Ambergris stories.
