Three Technical Questions
Jun. 28th, 2004 10:08 pm1) The committee of an sf con I'm helping with would like to set up a chat forum for occasional use. We had considered IRC but I'm advised that to have any level of privacy we would need our own server, and no-one seems confident enough to set this up. What are our options?
2) I've mentioned this before, but I still have the problem that I cannot ftp from my iBook. It's not a router issue, as I can ftp from a PC connected via the same router. Both OS X ftp applications and command-line ftp are affected: an upload starts but then just stalls. I've enabled passive ftp and opened the ftp port in the OS X firewall, but all to no avail. What am I doing wrong?
3) (A real shot in the dark here). I have been kindly provided (ta
miramon!) with an Akai M-9 reel-to-reel tape player for the SFF project to digitise old tapes of conventions. The tapes were recorded at 1 7/8 inches per second and although the M-9 can apparently play back at that speed I suspect that some mechanical reconfiguration is needed. (The 'slow/fast' switch currently toggles between Too Fast and Much Too Fast, and what looks like a speed selector seems to do nothing and I suspect is actually a tone adjustment for different recording speeds). I am a bit loathe to spend £20 ordering a facsimile manual only to find out either that there is a simple adjustment or alternatively that I need a part last made in 1967. So, any suggestions?

Date: 2004-06-28 11:50 pm (UTC)FTP: Can you ftp between the iBook and the PC?
Real-to-reel tape recorders - my old Akai 4000DS changed speeds (between 7.5ips and 3.75ips) by adding or removing a sleeve over the drive capstan, so if your M-9 really does 1.875ips, that may be what you need to do (as well as selecting Slow).
Alternatively, digitise the tapes at Slow and fix it in the mix? Software Is Easier Than Hardware.

Date: 2004-06-30 09:25 am (UTC)IRC is reasonably safe - you aren't talking banking or military security here. You should be able to use anyone's IRC server, setup a invitation only channel, and invite people.
Failing that I could probably install an IRC server on the GopherIT / SFLink machine if we can find someone else to promise to maintain it.
2) FTP requires two ports - a data and control port. You have presumably opened up the control port, but not the data one. hmmm
