Harry Harrison has died.

His books were a core part of my early sf reading and I have fond memories of them. It's hard to pick a favourite; Bill the Galactic Hero is a superb satire, but Spaceship Medic was a great introduction to hard SF. I only met him in person once, at a launch party at Forbidden Planet, although he was on programme at several conventions I attended.

Harry was a lovely man - this is really sad news.

Same here, The Stainless Steel Rat was one of the first SF books I remember reading.

I got to meet him at Evolution in 1996 which was good.

I've pulled "Deathworld" off the shelf to remind myself that he was very, very good for most of his career.

It's a great shame - inevitable, I suppose, but sad nevertheless. Have any of the obituaries mentioned his ghost-writing work as Leslie Charteris?
