Having Country Friends To Visit
May. 2nd, 2003 08:54 pmOne of the nice points of our current house is that it is built in what were once the grounds of a country house; our garden ends in a low fence beyond which is fifty yards of woodland and then fields between us and Brampton village. We get abundant wildlife in our garden: rabbits, squirrels and a multitude of birds, including numerous green woodpeckers.
And sometimes the wildlife is even closer. I went into our downstairs toilet earlier and noticed as I did my business that there was a pile of moss on the floor. I looked up to where we have a tiny window that I often leave open for ventilation and noticed something under the curtain pelmet...

Someone clearly thought they'd found the ideal place for a nest!

Alas, it had to go, before the occupant got as far as laying eggs. But whatever it was, it was amazing quite how much moss it had managed to wad up there.
