[livejournal.com profile] live_gerbil number 5.1 - the cinnamon-coloured pup of the latest litter of three - isn't doing to well. He's very lethargic and feeble, which is not a good sign in young gerbils. Not much we can do for now other than tuck him into the nest and see how he gets on :-(

Well, we checked again fifteen minutes later and he'd died :-[

This was our first pup lost of twenty-nine over five litters. No obvious sign of diarrhea, he hadn't had the clicky breathing characteristic of respiratory problems, and he'd been fine this morning, so it's not clear what the problem was. However, he was just past four weeks old, which is the sort of age where medium-level genetic defects can start to express themselves. We'll see how the other two get on; we might have to consider separating Ben and Jerry, at least for a few months, if Jerry is having sickly pups.
