The Register has a very interesting piece on how elements of the US Congress are trying to ensure that any post-war Iraqi cellphone network is based on Good Old American technology instead of Cheese-Eating Surrender Monkey designed GSM.

Coming next: Congress to propose that the US converts to driving on the left, instead of the vile French habit of driving on the right.

It's a pity that most of GSM was designed at Southampton and Bristol universities, while two of the largest manufacturers of GSM network hardware are US-based.

Now, it was the Americans, was it not, who got bent out of shape by the thought of Europe having its own GPS satellites, Europe having figured out that the US could actually lock it out of the system if it wanted to. Hmmm.

God forbid the US tries to impose NTSC television (aka "Never Twice the Same Colour") on them. That would be Cruel and Unusual Punishment.
