"We appear," said [livejournal.com profile] bugshaw during the trailers in the cinema tonight, "to have landed in the parallel universe where all the worst possible ideas for films and sequels have been made." She had a point. Terminator 3 seems like it may have one good line, which the trailer gives away. But it still looks a lot better than something called Equilibrium, which appears to be THX1138 meets Fahrenheit 451 on the set of The Matrix and gives every promise of being very, very bad indeed.

Surely the evening's film, Star Trek: Nemesis, had to be better?

No. The 'even films good, odd films bad' rule has finally been broken. Nemesis is not quite as dull as Insurrection but it is no First Contact. SFX budget aside, it's barely even a particularly good double episode. The plot shows some initial promise (the concept of the Remans is novel but never really explained or exploited) but quickly bogs down in remarkable silliness that cannot be disguised by flashy effects shots. In particular...

- Poor old Data: snuffing it heroically is one thing, but the poor bugger doesn't even get time for the statutory "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" speech. At least we'll be spared The Search for Data though, 'cos they've conveniently already found him!

- Shinzon. Ah yes, covert clone bred to impersonate his original and now all angst-ridden and bitter about his sense of self-identity. Er, anyone else here read Bujold?

- The Remans. 'Bred to be warriors and conquerors', which is why Captain Slaphead can shoot six of them in about ten seconds. And if I was trying to repel boarders from a race noted for their intolerance of all but the dimmest conditions, I might be tempted just to turn the lights right up and issue the red-shirts with Ray-Bans.

- Techno-Jeeps with guns! Mini hover-fighters! Has someone on the design team perchance been playing Halo?

Enough! Warp Factor 8 please, there might be a decent film somewhere out there...
