There should be a new mood icon, 'packing', showing the hamster/star/whatever of your choice surrounded by lots of bags and bits of underwear.

Off to Washington tomorrow, for several hectic days of visits to assorted acronymic government agencies, followed by a couple of days in Tampa to warm up a bit (and do a bit more work for HMG). I think I've remembered everything I need...

- Books for flight. In case the in-flight movies are too boring. Mind you, I'll be very surprised if BA aren't showing LOTR:TTT which ought to get me half way across the Atlantic by itself.

- Driving Licence. Yes, both my cow-orkers should have theirs, but I'm the only one who's driven in the USA in the last few years so I probably ought to be the one to drive from Dulles to our hotel. So no copious booze on the way out for me.

- NATO Travel Order. No, nobody in the military knows what one of these is actually for, but we're supposed to get one for duty trips abroad. I think somebody printed 10 million by accident once and we have to use them up.

- Medical Cover Letter. Which says, to paraphrase slightly, "Major Clanger is in the USA on HM Government Business. If he gets run over by a bus and ends up in ER, the resulting stupendous bill should not be deducted from his credit card but should instead be sent to Mr G Brown, c/o The British Embassy, Washington."

- Handy Guide To Washington. So that I can find the really good bar with 500 bottled beers that I was taken to a couple of years ago.

And enough underpants. But you probably trusted me to remember that.

Not sure if I'll be able to post to LJ whilst away (although I'm sure there'll be an internet cafe not too far from where we'll be). If not, see you all in a week or so...

The best bit of paper known to mankind - used to get into all US Military PXs BXs and anywhere else that likes almost giving away goodies to Brits on tour

Bon voyage

Hmmm, I've always found that my ID gets me served at the PX on US bases, although there was this one cashier at a base in California who was very confused by the whole concept of a non-US miltary...

Actually, it has proved useful - it got us through immigration in about a quarter of the normal time as it meant we were told to stand in the fast-moving 'US citizens' queue instead of the long and slow 'dubious foreigners' line.

I could have done with something like that when I arrived in Singapore. My flight arrived along with two 747s from China. Consequently, the arrivals hall was swamped and Singaporean Immigration were being very thorough with everyone.

Oh for a diplomatic passport or crew badge

As far as I know BA aren't showing The Two Towers yet on worldwide flights, as I recall... they won't get it for at least a couple more months. I'll also mail you to let you know of something very interesting to do in Washington...

You can't leave intriguing comments like that lying around without us demanding an explanation!

Only a tour of the White House, if Simon has the time/inclination. I have an acquaintance who works there. When I first went in Feb '01 at least I got to meet Clinton's dog, Buddy, and got all the way to the Oval Office. Not yer average White House tour, this.

Simon, I hope you have the time to do it because it really is well worth it.e

Thanks very much for suggesting this! Aaarrghh, our schedule this week is completely jam-packed (we are visiting six sites around DC in three days) so I have the awful feeling we might have to miss up this otherwise excellent opportunity. (Of coyurse we had all today off sight-seeing, but I suspect this offer isn't valid weekends anyway). Oh well... but we'll see what happens.

I trust you received the details I sent off-list... I would reckon Linus doesn't work weekends. If you and he were able to fit it in it's probably best if you arranged for an early evening visit, say around 7pm. Good luck.

I don't know about BA, but Virgin (who have the 'fly HMG staff to the USA contract' certainly aren't showing it. Indeed, the movie selection was uniformly dire and the only thing I watched was a documentary on mad Russian wing-in-ground effect aircraft (straight out of Thunderbirds that I'd seen already.
