...but I am, to use naval parlance, considering transferring my flag to Dreamwidth. In other words, I'll increasingly post there and cross-post to here, but I plan to allow comments on either.

If you have a DW account, please feel free to subscribe/grant me access via

Also, is there a good tool for downloading an archive (including comments) of my LJ in a format reasonably easy to browse and search offline? XJournal offers this in part, but only archives posts rather than comments.

I use LJArchive, which works very well:

Oh great, thank you. I'd been hoping someone would eventually fix lj Archive.

Thank you for pointing that out: I had given up on LJ Archive, as it broke a couple of years ago.

I'll spread the word... And drop a quid or two to the developer who fixed it.

Can I ask why you are making this decision and is Dreamwidth something I ought to explore?

Because LJ seems to be going through more frequent and extensive periods of downtime; this, together with the fact that LJ is now owned and run by Russians and is increasingly under online attack from various Russian political factions (including, it seems, the Russian government), means that I fear that sooner or later LJ is going to go down and stay down. I'd rather have a migration option in place.

DW is in most respects a clone of LJ using its open-source elements, although it has a somewhat more intelligent friending system that separates following someone from granting them access. You can crosspost between the two, i.e. post on DW and have it automatically posted in your account on DW as well.

I would suggest getting a free DW account, if only to reserve the same username if possible (of course you don't have to do that but it may well ease confusion).

I am 'davidwake' on dreamwidth.

With FaceBook, LiveJournal, now Dreamwidth, Wordpress and my own website, I am really looking forward to going to the pub for a natter with some mates tomorrow.

Really hoping things settle down a bit - amongst other things, I have a permanent account and a load of icons here, and won't if I move to Dreamwidth. However, I am there as ffutures too, and will be posting there if LJ goes down for an extended period again.

Well, I've done as you suggested, am now dorispossum on dreamwidth too. So do add me to your 'circle' (which seems to be the Dreamwidth jargon for friending). Am definitely hoping this is the last social network I'll have to join though, as this stuff takes way too much maintenance. :)
