I posted last month about getting my first pair of reading specs. I was certainly very impressed with how well I could read close wearing them, but I did find that computer screens were a little out of focus, which was frustrating as I'd supposedly been set up for working at a computer. In the end I went back to Vision Express and explained the problem. At first the assistant suggested I just needed to get used to them, but then she checked the prescription in their database with the one my glasses had been made to... and her face visibly fell. I was whisked back to see an optician, who quickly confirmed that my glasses had not been made to the specification they should have been and that I needed a considerably weaker mid-distance element. As I was having the revised pair prepared the assistant quietly suggested that in future I make sure whoever was translating the prescription into glasses was an opthalmic technician (like she was) rather than basic sales staff...

So, I now have new lenses, and whilst the near distance for reading isn't quite as close (but I don't really need to be able to read at four inches!) I can now comfortably read out to arm's length, which is more than enough even for working at my 27" iMac.

Oh dear! I'm glad it's sorted now, and that at least you didn't face the awkwardness I did when you needed to get it sorted out. Incidentally, it turns out that it is standard practice for opticians who have made up someone else's prescription to go back to the original optician and make them foot the cost of any changes if the prescription was incorrect - so I didn't need to consult a solicitor in the end after all! Still not a tangle I wish to get myself into again, though...

Argh....

This just confirms my resolve to keep going to the optician who's been working with my eyes for more than 20 years. He's an independent practice, not associated with any big marketing firms like Vision Express.

The problem is that my eyes are odd, and require a rather more complex prescription and examination than is typical for the majors. And if they can get your prescription wrong that easily, then they're very likely to screw mine up totally, and I wear glasses all the time.

The last time I tried someone other than my usual optician it was Cardiff University Opthalmic School and they messed it up.

Problem is, I suspect my optician will be retiring soon...

I use different glasses for reading and computer work. It's messy, but gives the best results.
