Part of the reason I've not posted much the last few days is that I've been playing Portal 2. Just as fun as the original, with the slightly reduced novelty substituted for by some really spectacular level design, especially in the middle and latter parts of the game.

And then I look out my window, and the view looks awfully, well, fitting.

(Yes, the Vanishing Point perspective-paste tool in recent versions of Photoshop is very nice indeed.)

OK, that's a VERY nice bit of shopping. I need a late version of Potatoshop. How long did it take?

About half an hour, mainly because it's a good while since I'd done anything like this and I needed to remind myself as I went along.

The steps were:

1) Define a reference plane over the top of the facing side of the tower.
2) Use clone stamp tool within that plane to erase the BT logo whilst preserving the perspective of the underling concrete.
3) Select the coloured elements from a copy of the Aperture logo.
4) Paste it in to the perspective reference plane.
5) Adjust size, blend mode etc until it looked right.
6) Define another reference plane for the left side of the tower.
7) Repeat (5) and (6), twiddling blend mode to get the logo colour looking right for the illuminated face of the tower.

This is Photoshop CS3, which came out about 4 years ago. I think Vanishing Point was introduced in CS2. Some of the stuff I've seen demo'd for CS5 such as content-aware fill is frankly scary!

You should promote this further - it's great, as well as a little scary!

I'm working through P2 myself at the moment. I'm sure some of the level design is more than a little inspired by Chris Foss SF covers, which is definitely a good thing!

I was thinking Dalek.

That's an eminently portalable tower :-)

Nah.. in london the new Shard is the Dalek tower -- it's already 90% of the way to looking like a dalek some nights before it's photoshopped.

Love it -- could add a portal opening on one of the antennae?

The trouble for me is that this is a first-person not an avatar game. I've just never been able to get into first person viewpoint games. People recommended Thief to me on the grounds that I was a Tomb Raider player but I just couldn't get to grips with it. I must try Assassin's Creed/2 at some point, though when I'll ever have time to try any gaming again, I don't know. Between work, conrunnning, learning Japanese and being a father, I think my time is spoken for for the next five years.

not to mention their ongoing attempts to tunnel to the centre of the earth at the bottom of Tottenham Court Road. (They didn't call it Centrepoint for nothing?)
