You'd never get that sort of interruption in QLL, just in case it was a trick.

But it's not necessarily misspent, as the physicist might have been minoring as a coder, or doing a dissertation on the Half-Life physics engine... And I'd argue that HL is a better time investment than WoW or EQ2...

Yeah. I know the protagonist of half-life: what I don't know is how much an average person knows about half-life, and hence whether the most likely question is "Which famous computer game featured Gordon Freeman blah blah blah blah blah aliens blah" or "Gordon Freeman, star of Half-Life, was inspired by which cousin of game designer blah..."...

For a University Challenge level question I don't think there could be much doubt that the answer is Half-Life - it's a gamble, but only a tiny one, and it's in the nature of the game that you have to take those gambles if you're playing competent opposition.
