Not this year, anyway. There have been things mooted, but no-one has as yet had the time to sort out anything. The marquis is on the steering committee -- I strongly suggest talking to him about it if you'd like to bid!
The only summer games cons I'm aware of were early to mid July this year. There's one next Summer at New Hall, but that's games only, not a full Unicon. Is there something else happening?
Last I heard the New Hall gaming people didn't think that having the Unicon actually helped their event (I could be hearing wrong) and so weren't interested in doing it again.
But then it might have just been that the people who do the Cambridge Unicon bid decided they needed a break ...
... it's about time another group offered to run one ...
The committee of next year's games con decided they wanted to focus on the games side. Over the years, the Cambridge games con committees have been formed by various permutations from a fairly large group of people, and opinions as to the benefits of combining with a unicon vary.
I think that the combination leads to significantly more interesting discussions, and that the high level of overlap between the two fandoms adds value to combining the events, but even I don't think that every BRS con should be a unicon (or that every unicon should be a games con).
I think it's very likely that there will be another combined con at some point.
Fabulous! I'm glad that I don't seem to have caused offence by my comment :-)
The Unicon used to move around the country (Leeds, Winchester, Cambridge etc.) and so there's no reason that it *should* try to be part of the BRS every year, but on the year's when the committees decide to run them together, I think it's an excellent thing (I don't have the time/money to get to all the cons I'd like to, so getting to a Unicon *and* BRS con the same weekend makes things easier and gives me a much wider range in the dealers room!)
Heck I'm going to a filking weekend event this weekend, and I already know there's going to be boardgaming at the weekend, and wouldn't be surprised to see other gaming going on!
19th-21st August: Consternation II, at Murray Edwards College (formerly New Hall), Castle Hill, Cambridge. The next British Roleplaying Society convention, following Baroquon, Rocococon, Conjuration, and Constitution, and also incorporating an Ars Magica "Grand Tribunal" meeting. Membership is available at the special early booking price of £17 per head until May 1st 2011; see the Web page for details and for prices after that date, and generally watch http://www.consternation.org/ for further details. http://www.philm.demon.co.uk/RPGs/conventions.htm
Constitution and Recombination were both Unicons at New Hall, Cambridge that had a major roleplaying component.
Ditto. Only been to a couple, I think, but they were good fun.
I must admit, the filk element at the last one I knew about put me off - at least gamers are quiet, but filk can be pervasive - but that's just me being silly. :¬)
