I finally got to see Avatar last night. It needs a longer post than I have time or brains to make right now, but I will say that I enjoyed it (despite its flaws) and it unquestionalbly sets a new bar for CGI, 3D and on-screen fantasy/SF worldbuilding.

What I will observe is that James Cameron would clearly love to have been the one to have filmed Starship Troopers.

That was sort of my point! I suspect Aliens was his warm-up, but then Verhoeven went and did his take on the book, after which a straight version was probably out of the question.

I wonder if a straight version is even possible in the space of a movie. You'd have to gloss over so much as to basically produce a pastiche or montage, which would rather belie the point.

Hopefully I'm underestimating some genius writer/director who will come along in 10 years and blow us all away :->

He also had the same poster on his wall as I did when he was growing up. Floating mountains? Check. Red and yellow scary yet appealing dragon thing swooping past them? Check. Yep, that's Roger-Dean-land.

Jesus, look at the grammar on that post of mine. I should be ashamed. Actually I should probably be more ashamed about having had a Roger Dean poster, but hell, I was only 14 at the time, m'lud.
