Longer review and comments to follow later.

For now: I think I've probably just seen the next Hugo winner for Best Dramatic Presentation (Long Form).

Mind you, I think Blomkamp and Jackson exercised admirable restraint in not making this the end title music. It is rather the impression District 9 leaves you with...

You are assuming quality will out, in a field which will be dominated by Star Trek, Watchmen and - provided the trailer is a hiccough - Avatar. [One of those three, I really rate in any case.]

And what about Moon?

Moon is the main competition in terms of actually being sf, and Star Trek in terms of sheer popularity and established fanbase. Watchmen may score on the 'just making a film of it that wasn't a complete travesty' basis, and we'll have to wait and see on Avatar. Also, Torchwood: Children of Earch will be eligible for Long Form, as will the forthcoming mini-series remake of The Prisoner, which looks like it could be very good indeed.

Yes, it's going to be a very strong field next year, but I think District 9 may do well through the sheer stick-in-voters-minds aspect.

Moon is pleasant but doesn't do anything sf films haven't done routinely for about 30 years (when did they make Silent Running?) can't see it as real contender.
