The people behind Spotify, that is - I've just realised (and conformed by looking online) that when Spotify plays one of its periodic adverts, it pauses if you mute the sound.

ITV's online player will happily let you run the main programme on one tab while you're doing something in another (I often do this for sports, with an ear out for when it gets exciting) but will only play ads when that tab is selected. And you can't fast fwd the ads.

And once again I'm glad that I run my computer sound into a separate amplifier unit so that I can mute sound without my computer having any idea that it has been muted. Ha, I say, ha!

Does it do that if you mute the sound on windows? Or just if you mute the sound on spotify?

In either case I'm impressed!

Well, I use Mac OS X. But yes, when I hit the mute button on the keyboard (or even lower the volume control via the 'vol down' key to less than 2) Spotify pauses the stream until I restore the volume.

I haz a solution:

1. External speakers, plugged in to the Mac's line out.

2. Power switch on external speakers.

I have external speakers - very nice ones. Unfortunately the volume control is on the woofer, which hides around the bag of my Big Monitor...
