From Jeff VanderMeer, a lovely piece about a pet capybara. I've been very fond of these critters ever since seeing some at Shepreth Wildlife Park; I love the way they always have a somewhat supercilious expression, probably because they can't help but look down their nose at you. (Hence this particular userpic!)

Alas, having one as a pet is not really an option unless I move to somewhere with a field and space for a capybara pond.

I can haz Capybaraburger?

(Yes, I am one of those omnivores who has no trouble reconciling 'cute' and 'tasty'.)

I think you should make obtaining a capybara pond a priority in your life from now on.

We wants Capybarae too, we always run to see them at various zoos and marvel at their sheer "Yes, I'm an ENORMOUS rodent, get over it" nonchalance, but we also cannot fit them in our garden. It would be worth it just to see what the cats made of them.

That has got to be a T-shirt slogan / picture. 'Yes, I'm an ENORMOUS rodent, get over it'.

Alan Dean Foster's novelisation of the original Star Wars, c. 1977-1978: the stranger who accosts Luke in the Mos Eisley cantina is described as looking like a capybara. That was my introduction to the word. Then I had to see the film to learn what one looked like.

I later learned that they are semi-aquatic and tend to share waterspace with piranhas. If I had to share with piranhas I think I would be as semi-aquatic as possible.

Hmm. You do know that it's the owner who writes that cute blog, don't you? Not the actual capybara.
