I know I've only got a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Law and am merely half way through the Bar Vocational Course, but I am still embarrassed to admit that, unlike Harriet Harman, I am having trouble placing the Court of Public Opinion in this diagram:

At least, I presume she can find it, because as [livejournal.com profile] liadnan notes, she's happy to refer to such a body.

Absolutely. When a government starts making laws to target a single person you have to start worrying. No matter what the law, nor whom the person.

What gets me is that the government (and public opinion) seems to want to take away the bonus system to replace it by something more long term - such as, dare I suggest it, pensions.

If you really wanted pensions to be adjustable based upon some performance criteria then you would have to have some structure in place for these to be seen to be fair.

It's almost as if the government was using Fred as a scapegoat and whipping up a media frenzy to divert people from more embarrassing news. such as us being responsible for hundreds of billions of RBS's debt in exchange for a fee of a few billion, a somewhat smaller amount than the money we'd just given them.

No it's not fair that an incompetent CEO is walking off with a pension worth 20x an MP's annual flat running expenses. HOwever it's only an extra 8 million. Compared to the amounts the government's throwing away left right and centre, it seems fairly trivial.

2010 can't come quickly enough...

I didn't realise that the Admiralty Court was at the Queen's Bench level. I presume that's a historical hold-over?

In part, but admiralty - shipping - frequently means extremely high value cases.

Yes, their prangs are of an altogether better class than your average High St solicitors get to deal with.

And HH is a QC so really should know better. Can the Queen fire one of her counsels?

I think she's only an honorary silk, ie because she was Solicitor General, though I could be wrong. I think in practice she was a solicitor, and at that time solicitors didn't get silk.

(NB also that it is only quite recently that automatic silk for any barrister who became an MP was abolished.)

Oh well, that's that route to QC out the window, then.

(Although being a former commissioned officer, I understand that if I became an MP after having been called to the Bar I would have to be referred to in the House as the Honourable, Learned and Gallant Member for Bogshire South.)

The difficulty arises because your puny diagram, unlike Harriet's mighty brain, is unable to travel through soundbitespace.

However, it's distressingly easy to mislay objects in soundbitespace...

It's probably around the corner from the Court of History. I think they're both on Long-Established Rhetorical Device Street.
