In memory of the late Tony Hart, the BBC looks back on 'Left Bank Two', a piece of music forever associated with him.

By comparison with Left Bank Two the average piece of shopping centre or elevator music sounds like thrash metal. As a piece of music it ambled along in sympathy with the cut-up card creations and intricate stencil work that flashed up in The Gallery, which also became a fixture of Hart's subsequent venture, Take Hart.

I wanted to work it up to play it as one of the 'band tunes' that we play before the folk club and in the interval -- but not all the notes appear on my melodeon. I can play it on the recorder. (When I'm the only melody instrument player in the band, I insert not-quite-folk tunes, like Stop the Cavalry, which pairs nicely with Galopede, and Eye Level, apparently the last instrumental no. 1. You know it as the theme to Van Der Valk).

Ah yes, Eye Level - that's long been sitting on my iPod. When I was young we used to have a copy of the 45 release, the B-side of which was Distant Hills, the theme to Crown Court.
