None of us are islands
Dec. 6th, 2008 01:31 pmIf you ever ask yourself 'could I do more for the fannish community?' then answer your question by going over to
helpvera and either offering something for the auction, bidding on something or just donating.
I did wonder about putting something in to be auctioned but the only creative stuff I do likely to be of interest to other people is photography and I give my pictures away free to anyone who likes them anyway. So I've donated, and urge you to do the same.
Also, the next time a libertarian bends my ear about how regulation, benefits and laws just get in the way of a free and just society, I'll point them at Vera Nazarian's story. It's easy for such people to claim that the feeble, stupid or indolent bring their problems on themselves*, but a bit harder for them to explain how it happens to people like Vera.
(*Which most of the time they don't. Also, having spent time observing my local Magistrates' Court, many of the people who do bring problems on themselves aren't any of these things - just selfish and not as smart as they like to think they are.)
