Your robes look much nicer than ours are. But, why no hat Mr Bradshaw?

The OU does not do hats or bonnets. It also, and this seems unusual to me, doesn't do red gowns for PhDs; everyone gets some variety of blue.

In December I go up to Edinburgh to get my LLM, for which I have to wear a dark suit, white shirt and a white bow tie. No hat there either, but apparently instead of having your hand shaken you get tapped on the head with a bonnet to Officially Graduate you.

When do you get your dissertation/final grade from Edinburgh?

Examiners' board is at the end of October, so early November some time.

OK your Edinburgh ensemble is worse... although I don't look great wearing a hat with the hijab.

With the bonnet I would be so worried that a mischevious imp would replace it at the last second, and the day would end with the Case of the Maimed Graduate...

Yup. I remember the white bowties. And the bonnet is traditionally held to have been made from a pair of John Knox's old trousers.

Edinburgh doesn't do the red gown for PhDs either: and not for the "usual" Ancient Scottish Universities reason (that it's too close to the undergrad red gown), but because Edinburgh doesn't deem the more modern PhD as being up to the level of the "proper" doctorates awarded for significant published bodies of work.

ETA: And how could I forget - many congratulations!

Tried to think of something original. Failed. So it's "congratulations" again.
