I haven't posted much about Elite:Dangerous lately. I continue to play it on and off, and have now traded in my Cobra Mk.3 for a Vulture, less an all-purpose craft and more one fit for bounty-hunting. My game play has been very much of the form of unwinding by blasting pirates to smithereens and spending the resulting bounty payments on upgrades, to the point that I still only have a few million credits in the bank but now have a ship that can single-handedly take out a Python.

Anyway, yesterday I was having a play and I found myself with a passenger. I don't recall Luke Skywalker or Starbuck having this problem; maybe Mira thought she was Nimitz from the Honor Harrington books.

I think I have a case of Back Seat Space Pilot Cat:

Your mention of Nimitz reminds me of my entry in the #BaenAwardStories "Richard of Manticore scowled at his lop-sided reflection. Why'd no-one warned him carrying 14kg of tree-cat could warp young shoulder-bones?"

I've watched a friend trying to play Guitar Hero while a kitten scaled her leg. It was impressive - particularly the look on her face.

She probably wants to eat the Trumbles (do they still have those in Elite: Dangerous?)

Forgot to add that in Oolite one of the add-ons adds the option to buy a ship's cat (or cats) and they're very useful - every so often they'll soak up damage instead of something valuable, like the cloaking device or the galactic hyperdrive.

No (or at least, not yet). I suppose if you did then there would be no reason that you couldn't have them cleaned out when docking at a station (unless you got a hefty fine for biocontamination.)

Back-seat drivers!

I picked up Elite: Dangerous in the Steam summer sale. Looking forward to giving it a go, but I gather it's fairly complex, so I know I'm going to have to pick a time when I can concentrate on it.

It starts off fairly straightforward: shift a few tons of low-value cargo (all your initial ship can carry) to from one star system to another, having looked to see where it's likely you'll be able to sell at a profit. Repeat for a while until you eventually find that you have more money than the cost of even a high-value cargo that fills your hold, so buy a bigger ship. At some point you can afford good enough weaponry that actively picking fights with pirates becomes a money-spinner as you pick up the bounties on them. Or head off into the unknown and make money surveying star systems.

I quite like the latter option: I always opted to play Scouts in Traveller back in the day!
