Revised 1958 UK sf/fantasy writers list
May. 24th, 2008 09:12 pmBarrington Bailey: First published 1955, so yes.
J G Ballard: Four sf stories published 1956-7, so yes.
Sydney Bounds: sf novels from 1955 according to EoSF, so yes.
Ken Bulmer: Yes, very active from 1952.
A Bertram Chandler: Yes, very active in the 1950s.
A V Clarke: Apparently utterly unknown other than as co-author of two Ken Bulmer works, so no.
E C Eliott: Lots of 1950s juveniles, so yes.
Lionel Fanthorpe: Yes (even under his own name alone!)
Philip E High: It took some looking, but this interview indicates he started to be published in 1955, so yes.
E R James: No EoSF entry. ISFDB indicates many stories from 1957 to 1963 but I suspect too obscure, so no.
Hank Janson: EoSF suggests that Stephen Frances was known under this name in the 1950s, so yes.
W E Johns: Hmmmm, I'm going to say no as his sf was very minor compared to his Biggles books.
Colin Kapp: I'd thought he didn't start writing until the 1960s, but it turns out his first published short fiction was in 1958, so yes.
John Kippax: I'd never heard of him, but he has an EoSF entry showing he was very active from 1955, so with reservations, yes.
Charles Eric Maine: Yes, very well-established by then.
Donald Malcolm: According to EoSF, just squeezes in with stories in 1957 and 1958. Yes.
Michael Moorcock: Only just, but ISFDB confirms three 1958 stories, so yes.
Patrick Moore: Several juveniles from 1962, so yes.
Dan Morgan: Two novels by 1958 according to EoSF, so yes.
Robert Presslie: Seems very obscure (no EoSF entry). ISFDB shows short sf from 1955, but on the whole no.
John Rackham: Just squeezes in according to ISFDB, so yes.
F G Rayer: Yes, several novels in the 1950s.
Bob Shaw: Hadn't realised that he'd started by then, but the ISFDB confirms it, so yes.
Nevil Shute: Yes.
Vargo Statten: Yes, lots of 1950s publications.
E C Tubb: Yes, active from 1951.
James White: Yes, he was writing long before Star Surgeon.
Lan Wright: EoSF has him active from 1952, so yes.
My consolidated 1958 list is thus
Brian Aldiss, Barrington Bailey, J G Ballard, Sydney Bounds, John Brunner, Ken Bulmer, A Bertram Chandler, John Christopher, Arthur C Clarke, Edmund Cooper, E C Eliott, Lionel Fanthorpe, Philip E High, Christopher Hodder-Williams, Fred Hoyle, Aldous Huxley, Hank Janson, Colin Kapp, John Kippax, C S Lewis, Charles Eric Maine, Donald Malcolm, Michael Moorcock, Patrick Moore, Dan Morgan, Mervyn Peake, John Rackham, F G Rayer, Eric Frank Russell, Bob Shaw, Nevil Shute, Vargo Statten, William F Temple, J R R Tolkien, E C Tubb, Hugh Walters, James White, T H White, Lan Wright, John Wyndham.
Now to work on part two: the 2008 list. Rather longer, I expect, even if I'm very strict and count writers who have published within the last couple of years.

Date: 2008-05-25 09:42 am (UTC)In a list of published sf writers from 1958, no, he probably doesn't rate a mention. But unknown? He's more commonly known in fan circles as Vince Clarke.
Robert Presslie: Seems very obscure...
I guess this may depend on whether you're thinking of this from 2008 perspective or how it might have seemed in 1958. Presslie had 11 stories published that year, three in December alone, and all in major British mags. He doesn't rate an EoSF entry because he never published a book but I think he must have been pretty visible in the late 50s as a magazine short fiction author.
