So, there I was late this morning, having gone to Middle Temple to drop off my membership application (doing it in person saves faffing around with entrusting my degree certificate to the mail or getting a certified copy). I'd bought the laptop with me so that I could do some work, although I was a bit away from the places I'd used before, such as the BL or Senate House.

At that point I remembered why the area was vaguely familiar; a few hundred yards along the Embankment is Savoy Place, the main London headquarters of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. [Or rather the Institution of Engineering and Technology as it now is, after a couple of mergers. I still think of it as the IEE, and I was amused to see that the prominent gold-leafed inscribed name over the entrance has obviously proved too expensive to change.] Savoy Place has a library; I'd not been in for a while, but it turns out to be a very nice library, with plenty of desks, power points, free wifi (if you log in with your member details) and a nice view over the Thames towards the South Bank. Savoy Place also has a very nice Members' Bar, which not only does good lunch snacks but also has INFINITE SUPPLIES OF FREE COFFEE for IET members! Given local coffee prices, I only have to drink about fifty coffees a year to save the equivalent of my membership fees.

IET for teh win, as I believe the young people say today.
