When you English people come to visit us here in rainy California, we'll take you to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, and show you all the same things all over again. And the Difference Engine No 2, whose T-shirt I actually happen to be wearing as I type (it is of Special Moment in this house, as the Engine marks the spot where I asked K to marry me).
If we time it right, we can see the Engine in operation (it crashed, the day we were there; the nineteenth-century equivalent of Blue Screen of Death is Frozen Crank, apparently). If we time it really really right, just as we approach the admissions desk Chris Garcia will dive out of the back office crying "They don't pay! They don't pay...!"
