Your impression is radically different from mine; e.g. I know mjg59 who does very hard work in getting power management to work on laptops under linux. There certainly are a few Eric Raymonds around, and I'm unimpressed by the "Ruby on Rails" lot, but I'm curious as to what you think the "level of abstraction which has been made easy by people doing the hard stuff" is.
