Experimenting with High Dynamic Range and Tone Mapping; taking three pictures with varying exposures and combining them via Photomatix Pro.

Edinburgh Dusk 1  Edinburgh Dusk 2  Edinburgh Dusk 3

Things I've learned from this:

- Even with a tripod, getting good alignment can be difficult.
- Long exposures, telephoto zooms and gusty wind do not combine to make sharp pictures.
- HDR / Tone Mapping is a very impressive technique, but it's hard to avoid tone fringes with contrasty subjects.

Even so, I'm pleased with the results and want to try more.

High Dynamic Range is a technique they use in CGI for the movies. The "lightprobe" is essentially an HDR image, which is a map of the entire scene lighting, including light reflected from surrounding objects.

The software I use can't load better than 8-bits per channel, but the internals of the render engine will handle 16-bit, and there are ways of splitting and recombining the 16-bit image to get it through the 8-bit barrier.

But apparently you need large chrome-plated balls.

I really like the angle you've used for the tomb thingy! I'm almost holding my breath waiting for a moon to move out from behind it or a couple of bats flit about... great work!
