I successfully battled the Registration Dragons, with only a slight hiccup as the credit-card machine coughed slightly at the £BIGNUM course fee and asked the poor finance bod to call the bank and ask various questions of me to confirm that I really was Simon B and I really did want to give all that money to the University of Edinburgh. I then went on a bit of a wander and found the sports centre, where I made a much, much smaller payment to join the gym for a year. Now I just have to use it...

Having felt all YOUNG and STUDENT-LIKE after registering, I then walked through the central university plaza, where hordes of Bright Young Things were handing out flyers and passes for clubs and parties to all and sundry. Well, almost all and sundry; they parted like the Red Sea at the approach of the clearly lost and probably senile old codger and I didn't get so much as offereed a novelty condom. Slunk off to the library to do some work towards my OU assignment, feeling very OLD and OUT OF PLACE.

PG induction this afternoon; LLM arrival brief tomorrow. Bus Pass application next week.

They seem to be able to smell staff, as well, regardless of age.

They don't you know. I don't know how often I've walked in to invigilate an exam , say, and had to say well actually i'm staff..

That's different, I meant the flyer/freebie-hander-outers.

Arrr, it be said in these here parts, Jim lad, that one shall come who knows great things, and who hath experienced things beyond the wildest dreams of studentkind. And he shall be known as the conrunner, which is, in the common tongue, "jammy bastard".

(Sorry, practicing for next week.)

Welcome to my university experience of the last five years.

I think most of the BYTs think I'm a member of staff, not least because I wear my library card on a lanyard to ensure I don't lose it.

Oh that would DEFINITELY make you a librarian!!

Even the staff (non library) refuse to wear the lanyards:-)

A lot of people do at UKC; though you would have thought the fact that I wear a different lanyard, a very bright yellow one with Lib Dem slogans on it, might be a clue. Very unobservant the BYTs.

We have official company lanyards.

About 30% of the staff wear other ones they've picked up somewhere because they liked the colours more...

Aw. It's ok, you'll find the LLMs have plenty of old codgers and are usually an incredibly fun social group. Am envious :)
ps go friend loveandgarbage, he is an eduni lecturer and has an interesting poll up :)
pps have you discovered the nice new uni pool at Moray House? easy to miss as not near anything else.

Did you have a little accident in the library dear?

Ah, that's the library up the road.

From the description of the accident, they should be looking for representatives of the kinkier end of Washington DC fandom...

you're a younger old codger than me or the beermeister. I think this sounds like birthdayitis.

p.s. beermeister says he has an Edinburgh pub guide (dated but has seen lots of action) .Do you want it?

It's not the brown landscape-A4 one is it? Or the one with the cartoon cover?

not sure -it's a slim paperback and we picked it up at the Book festival . I think it might be a Luath press publication.

I think there may be more recent ones still littering the house :)

Ooh. I don't think I know that one. Apparently the brown one I mentioned above, produced by EUSPB/Polygon (the student publishers) just before I got to Edinburgh in 1977 should really be a Brown one, as our current PM was apparently involved on the produciton side.

[Thinks: I can feel a 30th anniversary pubcrawl coming on]
