The latest 'you might like to buy this' mail from Amazon suggested that I might like War of the Worlds: A Modern Version of the Classic Novel .

Pardon?

A bit of googling led me here. Make sure you aren't drinking (or cover your keyboard), follow that link, then feel free to vent your spleen in the comments.

OMFG, this is sacrilege. And I can't remember the last time I saw a promotion that almost admits the book itself is rubbish.

It wasn't immediately obvious who the 'author' of this gem is - one Robert Reginald, which appears to be the pseudonym of Michael Burgess, a librarian at CSUSB.

I suspect (or at least hope) that it's a deliberate stinker along the lines of Atlanta Nights.

I'm quite looking forward to it...

No one would have believed, in the first years of the twenty-first century, that human affairs were being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; because, as recent space exploration has shown, there's no such things as Martians.

Well, our book appears to have finished a little earlier than expected, so here's some music.
Dum de dum de dum de dum, dum de dum de dum dum (continues for 200 pages).

Mind you, I actually had to stop reading "The First Men In The Moon" becuase the science was so, so wrong I couldn't suspend my disbelief. Oh dear, I'm the target audience...

I'm just off to do a revised version of Space: 1999, since we all know that the moon wasn't actually blasted out of earth's orbit in 1999.

It's not very interesting.

I note that the publisher is also into alternative medicine, which confirms all my worst prejudices.
