Last night [livejournal.com profile] bugshaw and I got back in late from the cinema to find Heidi the Hamster sitting atop the nest-box in her tank in what we have come to recognise as her "can I come out for a roll around" pose. So, B opened the lid, decanted her into her plastic ball, and set her down, whereupon she indeed scooted off for some exercise. B, being tired, then headed off to bed on the understanding that I'd stay up for a few more minutes and put Heidi away again.

About ten minutes later, I too was yawning so got up to see where H's ball was.

It was sitting on our landing. With the lid off.

Oh Bugger.

Quick check: no signs of hamster anywhere. Close all doors and rouse B from her slumbers to come and help with Hammy-hunt. After some poking around we conclude that H has doubtless found some nook to hide in (oh, we named her so aptly) so B deploys her patent technique from when previous hamster escaped: leave a couple of treats in each room, close the doors and retire to bed.

This morning, both of the hamster treats in the living room had gone. Result!

The next step is narrowing down her location, which is already pretty obviously going to be Under One Of The Billy Bookshelves. And B is busy making a Hamster Macro.

Hah! Hamster recaptured, after we sighed deeply and emptied an entire bookcase so that we could move it and look behind. And there she was, with a small pile of hoarded treats, some fluff garnered from the carpet, and one of B's lacework bobbins, now slightly nibbled. Goodness alone knows what plans she had for it.

I like the logic. Saves a lot of hunting in the wrong places.

Favourite escaped-hamster stories, vol 17, ch 2:

M'friend and I were looking after someone else's hamster. This is before hamster-balls swam into my consciousness; we just closed the doors and let him out to run around on the carpet. Under the radiator...

Umm, where's he gone?

Umm, what's that lump climbing the wall, beneath the wallpaper...?

Yup. Under the radiator, the wallpaper was unstuck; so he'd got between the paper and the plaster, and was climbing. Determinedly...

At least she didn't chew your books (I hope).

Evil, funny hamster. I love her adventures, but I'm glad you found her before she executed whatever monstrous, world-destruction-plan she had intended to foment from her stronghold behind the bookcase.
