Over on law and intellectual property blog IPKat, Jeremy Phillips promulgates some ruthless new rules on style for the Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Practice. His pearls of wisdom include:

  • In the part of the article that was formerly called "Conclusion" and which will now be renamed to suit the context, the verbal excrescence "it remains to be seen" is to be surgically excised wherever it appears;

  • The word "perhaps" is prohibited wherever it indicates only that the author wants to say something but is afraid of being wrong;

- see his post for the rest. Jeremy welcomes further suggestions; perhaps [livejournal.com profile] fjm could pass on the Foundation Editor's First Law: 'Impact' is Not a Verb...

oh Dear. Dead accurate and I too am a sinner..

He neglects to add that "it remains to be seen" means "there's more research to be done on this but I'm too knackered" or alternately "I have to get this published NOW before the 2007 RAE" :-)
