I've got a 12-hour flight to LA next week, and I am not looking forward to having just the inside front cover of my passport to read.

Even so, this response to the current baggage restrictions did get an amused snort out of me:

(Just in case you don't get the reference)

Thank you! I needed that.

You can take your wallet - I wonder if you could get away with carrying some folded up pages from a puzzle book in it? No pens/pencils allowed though.

Just think how much damage a terrrrist could do if he managed to smuggle a paperback on board!

doing BA to LA the week after next for Worldcon and the idea of cover-to-covering BA inflight magazine is a dreary prospect --and the movies are as bad. I suppose I could talk to someone. I know the pen is mightier than the sword but this is ridiculous.

I have been pondering the same question (if I had to make another trip to San Francisco). I had a couple of ideas, not researched. Can you buy a book once you get through security? How about a tiny MP3 player, stocked full of audiobooks, that you can keep on your keychain?

If you are going Virgin (and maybe now BA), the onboard entertainment system is excellent (though they may still not have installed the new one on all their planes). You then only have to twiddle your thumbs during takeoff and landing.

BTW, isn't LHR->LAX was more like 11 hours?

They say nothing electronic, which will cause problems for most people with battery powered watches...

Flying BA more than once a month I can confirm the movies are bad, and they don't change much...

That is if the inflight entertainment system is working properly.

You'll most likely be on the plane for 12 hours, end to end.

The entertainment system on BA isn't great in comparison to Virgin, but I find the BA cabin, overall, more comfortable. They'll have newspapers on the plane for business class that the airline will have approved, and magazines - but not for the whole plane.

No electronics of any kind at the moment, including key fobs.

I think you get an extra inch between seats in BA, which can make quite a difference. Although I find it terribly cramped in Virgin, I still prefer decent entertainment.

they've said you can buy stuff after security, UNLESS you're flying to the US

Flying out of the US earlier this year they let me buy matches after security after making a huge fuss about confiscating my lighter, which I was rather fond of. Had so much hassle generally that time that I decided not to travel to the US in the forseeable future. I don't think I'll fly anywhere for the time being if I can avoid it at all.

This morning they were saying you can buy whatever you want airside and take it on board. So, that'll be a boost for the airport blockbuster.

Sorry to delete the comment, but I try to avoid mentioning details of my job in unlocked posts.

Do they still allow you to take Snacks On A Plane?

No (which is causing some major angst on my friends-list).

They won't even let me take a couple of Slim-Fasts. That would be Shakes On A Plane...
