I am having a week off between jobs, and really thought I'd get a lot done around the house.

This morning, I came down to breakfast at 0830 and thought I'd check my email, just to see how Worldcon-related stuff is going.

It's now 1140 and I'm still in my pyjamas, still sorting out email. It is also now clear that I will have about minus eight free hours at Worldcon...

Anyway, mostly dealt with now, and I've got to get dressed as [livejournal.com profile] bugshaw and I have tickets to see Batman Begins after lunch.

A few months ago, a new cinema opened literally five minutes' walk from us.

Unfortunately, it's a Cineworld.

This is not to say that Cineworld run bad cinemas. The projection is good, the sound is clear and at the right level, the layout is adequate and the seats are comfortable. Admittedly, the signposting for the toilets is not very clear (well, that's my excuse, Officer...) but as an example of a cinema it is perfectly fine.

The problem, as with every other Cineworld I've been to, is the ghastly House Rules intro they show in front of every frickin' movie. You know, the one in 2000-vintage CGI with a corny Lara Croft rip-off who seems to have been snorting bootleg testosterone whilst bunking off her anger-management therapy, which seems to show that The Management's approved technique for dealing with smokers, mobile-users and chatterers is gratuituous physical violence. Except that clearly it got complaints, because the damn thing's now been cut and re-edited to remove the actual cracking of people's skulls together (yes! really!) and perversely this makes it even more annoying to have to sit through. I hates it, hates it I does, and must remember to bring my iPod along in future so I can listen to something loud and distracting with my eyes closed when the cursed thing comes on again.

(Aside from that, Batman Begins was pretty good, although after the horror of the Bat-Flick That Shall Not Be Named with Clooney vs Arnie, even the return of Adam West with big 'KER-POW!'s pasted over comedy fight scenes would have been an improvement.)
