January 9th: 17 st 11 lb, or 113 kg - about the heaviest I've ever been, and the point where I decided to Do Something About It.

Today, after four weeks of sensible dieting and regular exercise: 16 st 13 lb / 107.5 kg.

Four more kg, and I'll be the lightest I've been since 2001.

Four more after that, and I'll have hit my short-term target of getting below 100kg, hopefully in time for Eastercon.

[I don't want to sound too smug about this. But I've tried losing weight and getting back into regular exercise before; for some reason I can't really put my finger on though, this time it seems to be working. I just hope it continues!]

The secret is ... keep good habits!

I think I'm managing to do that. In terms of exercise, I'm trying very hard to go to the gym four or five times a week if at all possible, and not to let other things get in the way. For food, I've managed to convince myself that flapjacks, caffe latte, beer (other than on specific social occasions) and bagels will all still be there after I've lost weight.

It's all good ...

... but I was thinking of lifetime habits, and I can't see you going to the gym that often for the rest of your life :-) The worst thing you can do is have your weight yo-yo - G's been steady at 100 kg for about 10 years now. G's problem is that he's got me to help him with good eating habits, but I can't solve the exercise part of the equation for him :-S Aikido and cycling work for me - we've not got convenient swimming and horse-riding facilities for G :-((

Excellent work. Getting below 100kg is a great goal but don't be disheartened if it takes longer than you originally thought. The body tends to slow the weight loss - but it does keep losing. At my worst I was 115-117kg and getting back down under 100kg was a major boost to my confidence and faith in my new diet and exercise program.

It sounds like you're going about it the right way - looking at good diet and exercise rather than faddish calorie restriction and sloth - good luck with continued loss!

That's really good. I think exercise is a big part of the key. Don't try to lose weight too fast though. There can be a rebound effect.

I think the other key is to add in 'good' foods to replace the 'bad' ones. Add in loads more fruit/veg (and different kinds of veg) and you won't feel hungry and you'll still have something to snack on that won't pile on the calories.
