[livejournal.com profile] bugshaw and I have just been pleasantly surprised to find that I, Robot is not nearly as dire a movie as the trailers suggest. Yes, it has rather more in the way of action and explosions than your typical Asimov short story, but there was a lot more in the way of Asimov's ideas surviving into the final film than I'd expected. (Not to mention a nice homage to the Foundation novels.)

As an aside, I'm beginning to suspect that there's a whole slew of movies that people miss out on because their trailers give misleading impressions. I've certainly heard people comment that they avoided Three Kings and Black Hawk Down because their trailers made them look like stereotypical gung-ho war movies.

Yes, I know just what you mean about film trailers...

I've not seen Black Hawk Down, but I caught Three Kings when it was shown on TV a couple of years ago. I hadn't bothered to see it in the cinema, because the trailer looked so predictable. I was very (pleasantly) surprised.
The only explanation I can think of for the vast difference between the Three Kings trailer and Three Kings itself is that some miscellaneous executives had an attack of nerves when they saw the film; then put out a very bog-standard trailer in an attempt to disguise the potentially controversial content.

I think that must be what happened. I only saw if after I heard an interview with George Clooney and thought, hmmm... that doesn't sound like the trailer.

I felt the same way about I, Robot. I thought the plot itself was certainly in keeping with some of the ideas he explored in the later series. I also thought the "future" was nicely understated with some good chrome.

There's a very understated future...

... in Code 46, I think this may be more because they couldn't really afford a stated future.

:)

I've just been seeing some interesting review of Code 46. Apparently it's showing in Seattle. I might try and see it one evening this week when I'm there.
