It's been a long time since a barrister supposedly had to explain to the bench that The Beatles were "a popular beat combo, M'Lud" but the judiciary is clearly still sensitive to the suggestion that it is out of touch with popular culture. At least, that is the impression given by Mr Justice Lewison in the opening paragraph of his judgment in the recent case of Taylor v Rive Droite Music Ltd:
"Mark Taylor is a talented music producer and song writer. He has produced songs for world famous artistes, including Cher, Enrique Iglesias, Rod Stewart, Lionel Richie, Tina Turner and a host of other household names, known even to judges."
But then, they even own iPods these days.
