I might be being very thick here. In fact I hope I am, as the alternative is going to be very timesome

Up until about October I used a desktop PC and an HP Jornada PDA. The common PIM between these two was Outlook, so although I never, ever, used Outlook on the PC for email I did use it as my contact and calendar app. It sync'd cleanly with the Jornada and that was all I really wanted out of it.

I then had to give back the Jornada (it belonged to Work) and bought a nice new Palm Tungsten T3. The T3 has its own Palm Desktop software, but it can also sync with Outlook and so for simplicity I carried on using Outlook.

Recently I bought an iBook to replace the ageing PC. I now want to move my contacts database from the PC to the iBook. This is not proving as simple as I had thought.

Option 1: Export data from Outlook to iBook as vCards. Not that easy; for some reason, my version of Outlook does not like to export more than one record at a go. Also, not all the vCards seem to want to import easily.

Option 2: Sync the PC with the Tungsten, then the Tungsten with the iBook. Unfortunately, my iBook and T3 resolutely refuse to sync, despite all my efforts.

Option 3: Use Bluetooth (which does work) to send contacts from the Tungsten to the iBook. Again, this only works one contact at a time and not all of them copy across properly.

Option 4: Export all my contacts as a CSV file and import them into iBook Address Book. I haven't tried this yet as it will be tedious and probably involve a lot of cleaning up. However, I am sure it will work as a last resort.

The failure to get Tungsten-to-iBook sync to work is particularly annoying. I suspect I'll need a hard reset on the Tungsten and then to start from scratch... except that of course that will remove my contacts data! I've got an SD card which I thought I could back up this info on to, but I find to my dismay that it seems there is no way with the Tungsten's inbuilt software to back up data (as opposed to applications) to an SD card! It looks like there might be third-party apps I can try, mind you, but even so this is an annoying omission. (Slag off Windows Pocket Edition all you like, it did at least give you transparent file management.)

Sigh... I'm sure I'll get this sorted out soon, but it's just tiresome that what should be a trivial task is proving so awkward.

Oh, and if you think that's an annoying oversight, how about this one:

My new phone/pda can use midi files as ringtones. Except the sync software refuses to acknowledge that the Palm knows what to do with midi files and won't transfer them. There are two options here: put the files onto an SD card then use Filez to move them into the main memory area, or go online and download the files directly, paying per byte for the data at extortionate GPRS rates. And I don't have a card reader to allow the first option.

I've had a similar problem - I can get my Clie to sync with my iBook, but it doesn't show any data in PalmOS on the iBook...

When I did this I ended up using CSVs. It wasn't that much of a hassle, but it took a while to work this all out.

Mind you I was exporting from a Psion, which made things rather more interesting.

There may well be import/export scripts available online, though. So have a google and see if that throws up any useful applescripts.
