You probably know the story, but I remember reading a report of a court case where the judge realised half way through that it was the person's own fault he'd suffered whatever it was he had. So the judge turned to the counsel and said, "Is you client not aware of volenti non fit injuria." To which the reply came, "In Bradford, they say it all the time, M'lud."

(And my memory has probably mangled this story.)
