Re the defence attorney being seen as the bad guy, I think this is derived from the US. I don't know if you are into detective stories, but I can recommend an excellent book by Michael Connelly called "The Lincoln Lawyer" which is indeed about such a bottom-feeding scum-like person. It was so gripping that I had to skip to the end to see how it came out before reading the last 100 pages.
