I want software that's written by someone whose mortgage and livelihood depends on the quality
This is one of the reasons I'm such a skeptic about FOSS in something like the phone business. Phones are a cheap mass market consumer good. You want it to _just work_. You really really don't want to be reflashing your phone too often unless you're paid to do it for a living.
Developing a phone takes a significant man year investment of engineering effort to get it working and ready to ship at a quality a punter will like, once you've paid those engineers you actually find the cost of the software is a small fraction. It's why we're seeing a lot of traction in the market place for Windows Mobile because they make it easy to get a device ready to ship.
A good example of their new approach is the new Palm Treo 500v with the new UX.
