The whole point of the book, above all else, is that the concept of God and religion can and should be subjected to rational, scientific examination. You cannot, really, judge whether or not that argument works, or if Dawkins succeeds in doing just that, without actually reading it.
There are others with a softer approach - try Daniel Dennett - but they are making exactly the same point.
