Genuinely interested in SF, which is the impression I'd gained from his reviews. He didn't seem to have directly encountered either the fannish or sf-academic communities before though, and was very keen to find out 'what made us tick'; in particular, he was very interested in finding out what everyone's day job was (which comes across in the article). I confess I took some care to explain the differences between media fandom and written-sf fandom, whilst not belittling the former too much - Hanks being a grade-A Buffy fan!
